So in my conversation with Aljo, we got really deep into the struggle with impatience. In particular, external forces that are out of your control which are partially blocking the company from reaching the next steps.

In Aljo’s case, he started Funk Harbor Rum, a Spirits brand celebrating Jamaican Heritage. With Liquor, you have to get a license to sell in every state you operate in. The process of getting approved can take way longer than expected, so I appreciate the frustration from Aljo when he mentioned this was happening to him despite his incredible brand and success.

I feel the same way, but with our own podcast. I thought many large companies would have seen the value of sponsoring us over a year ago, and it stinks to see companies we’ve built relationships with over years partner with other brands they think are more valuable.

But to quote Paul Graham “Startups are like sharks, if they stop swimming, they die”

So we all have one choice really, and that’s to keep swimming. I don’t want to speak for Aljo, but maybe for him that means continuing to market the brand on social media. For us, we are going to continue cultivating one of the most powerful communities on the planet.
